PART 3 |
My greatest desire in this life is the same as every true Christian, to be like Jesus Christ. I want my heart, mind, and actions to be so conformed to the image of my Savior that I would be able to join Paul in saying, “follow me as I follow Jesus.” In pursuit of this personal holiness I began to pray and ask God to reveal to me anything in my life that was an unknown sin, weight, or failure that was causing me to be less than Christ-like. Without a doubt I was confronted with my pride.
Pride is like flood waters breaking through barricades. It isn’t what I thought it was and each time I felt that I finally understood it, a new hole burst open revealing deeper and deeper layers of my evil pride. Pride was affecting every area of my life and most of the time I didn’t even realize it. Pride is not always arrogance. Pride is subtle. Pride is a master of disguise and deceit. The Bible teaches that God actively fights against the proud man, in fact I think one could make the case that God hates pride more than anything else. I was fighting God!
My meditations on pride quickly turned into a full-on study of humility. I have come to believe that the root of every single sin is pride. I believe the chief attribute of Jesus in heaven before the incarnation, during the incarnation, and even now is humility. Humility is the one thing every Christian ought to pursue with all their might. You cannot be holy or Christ-like in any way without humility.
I am very excited to have the opportunity to share with the church what God has been teaching me and causing me to slowly grow in, concerning humility. I will teach on this gloriously communicable attribute for three consecutive sermons. If you live in Macon, I want to invite you on Sundays, July 31 and August 7 & 14 to MaconFBC at 6PM for this short series.
